Dorothy Elaine Dunn was born October 4, 1934, in Rural Sturgis, SD, to Jakob and Margret (Lorang) Weyrich. She was the second youngest of ten children. She graduated from high school and went on to a Teachers College.
Dorothy married Lynn Dunn of rural Harding County on June 4, 1953, in Belle Fourche. She moved to Texas with her husband, Lynn (who was stationed there for the military), for two years before moving back to South Dakota. They purchased the farm east of Vale in 1961. They reared their four sons, James, Daniel, Mark, and Keith, on the farm. Dorothy started a dairy with her husband in the 70's which she worked hard on alongside Lynn till she retired in the late 1990's. She loved to travel in her RV with Lynn, which included several trips to Alaska, Norfest in ND, and so much more.
Dorothy was big in the local activities of the community. She was an active member of the Empire Friends Church until it closed. She loved to quilt and crochet. She loved to oil paint the land around her, along with anything else that she thought was beautiful. She had a passion for gardening and growing flowers alongside her house. Dorothy loved to play cribbage and solitaire in her free time. She was a big supporter of the 4-H groups. Dorothy shared 64 years of marriage with her best friend before he passed in 2017.
Dorothy, 84, rural Vale, died Monday, July 15, 2019, in her home, Vale, SD.
She is survived by her sons, James and his wife, Sarah of Austin, TX, and their children, Ryan (wife, Mikayla) and Rachael; Daniel and his wife, Wanda of Vale, SD, and their children, Jennifer, Michael (wife, Sarah), Danielle, and Kristen (husband, Michael Connell); Mark and his wife, Lori of Conroe, TX, and their children, Kevin (wife, Stacey), Scott, and Brian; Keith and his wife, Colette of Vale, SD, and their children, Brianne (husband, Mateo Ochoa) and Logan; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Gladys Cox of Vale, SD; and brothers, Paul Weyrich of Newcastle, WY, and Frank Weyrich of Yoder, WY.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn; her parents; her brothers, Victor and Leo; and sisters, Louise, Clara, Helen, and Mary.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2019, at Believers Fellowship Church in Sturgis with Pastor John Williamson officiating. Burial will follow at the Vale Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the Vale Community Hall and the Vale Cemetery.
