IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy Anne
Peterson
June 5, 1926 – January 7, 2019
Dorothy was born in Newell, SD, on June 5, 1926, to George C. and Hazel (Gadsden) Arpan. In her youth, she lived at Hoover, SD, where she got to spend a great deal of time with her favorite aunt, Alice Hoover, and cousin, Don Hoover, riding horses, hiking the prairies, and loving animals. She moved into Newell where she graduated high school in 1944.
Dorothy met the love of her life at a dance in Belle Fourche and married Edward A. Nash in 1950. Together they had three children; Sandy, Gary, and Deb.
Edward died in an accident in Homestake Mine in November 1963, leaving her a young widow with three children to raise. She went to work as Whitewood town auditor for many years, and then worked at Wingspread (Sky Ranch for boys) in Sturgis as a secretary until she retired.
In 1967, she married Howard Peterson and they spent a lot of time camping and fishing. She supported Howard and Deb at their horse events by cooking up fried chicken and potato salad at 5 in the morning and then timing the events at the playdays, rodeos, or ropings. She was Deb's biggest fan; not many barrel racers had their 90-year-old mother in the stands cheering her on. Dorothy and Howard divorced in 2012.
Dorothy was a lifetime member and former state officer of the Good Sam Camping Club and a charter member of the Key City Ramblers. She also was on a couple of bowling leagues for many years. Dorothy was proud to be a life member of Beta Sigma Phi, the Society of Black Hills Pioneers, and the Black Hills Country Music Association.
She loved people and maintained friendships for life. She was a voracious reader that included books, newspapers, and magazines. She loved playing cards and board games and going to garage and rummage sales.
Dorothy Anne Peterson, 92, Gillette, WY, and formerly of Whitewood, SD, died Monday, January 7, 2019, in Gillette.
She is survived by her three children: Sandy (Terry) Denton, Story, WY; Gary (Lilliana) Nash, Vero Beach, FL; and Deb (Monty) Strohschein, Rozet, WY; two grandsons, Troy Nash and Nate Strohschein; five granddaughters, Tanya (Denton) Bennett, Carrie (Denton) Patton, Mandy (Strohschein) Erickson, Michelle Nash, and Kristen Nash; and nine great-grandchildren.

She kept track of all birthdays and anniversaries in the family. She was the glue that held us all together and we thank her for that.
