Douglas E. Iverson, 62, Sturgis, died Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at his home in Sturgis.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2011 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Rev. Herbert B. Cleveland officiating. Inurnment follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard. A memorial has been established to the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.
Doug was born September 13, 1949 at Vermillion, SD, to Wayne and Mathilda (Jepsen) Iverson. The family moved to Sturgis while Doug was very young. He attended Sturgis schools until joining the Parks Job Corps Center in California.
Doug enlisted in the US Army and served as a door gunner on a huey for three tours in Vietnam. Following his discharge he returned home and worked at the Homestake in Lead for six months.
Doug married Joyce Staudinger on February 14, 1974 at Ft. Meade. Doug re enlisted and returned to active military service. The family lived in Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Ft. Richardson, Anchorage, AK, and Fitzimmons in Denver, CO, prior to his honorable discharge. The family returned to Sturgis and Doug worked at Fort Meade in nursing services. He retired in 2000 from housekeeping.
Doug was a member of the VFW, DAV and served on the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.
Survivors include his wife Joyce Iverson, Sturgis; one son Jason Iverson, Huron, SD; one daughter, Daneen (Michael) Domogalski, Sturgis; two sisters, Pam Iverson, Chicago, IL, Michelle McIntyre, Mazomanie, WI; also one grand daughter, Kylie Domogalski, Sturgis.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and one niece.
