Obituary

Douglas Philip Winter, 62 of Lemmon, SD passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at Fort Meade, SD. Graveside funeral service will be Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery with Mr. Todd Tobin officiating and Rapid City VFW Post 1273 providing military honors. Visitation will be Monday August 8, 2011 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Douglas was born in Lemmon, SD May 18, 1949 to Phillip and Gladys (Short) Winter. He went to grade school at Fee School, a country school in Morristown, SD and Concordia in San Clemente, Ca. He graduated from San Clemente High School in 1967 and went to MiraCosta College in Oceanside, Ca. and entered the US Army in 1969. He was a staff sergeant and was stationed in Germany. He worked at various jobs in San Clemente. He returned to South Dakota in 1976 and farmed with his dad for a couple of years and took over the farm for five years himself and later he moved to Lemmon where he worked at Gregorian Copper followed by Wheeler's Manufacturing and was a caretaker for the Greenhill Cemetery in Lemmon.

Doug enjoyed the great outdoors and had been an avid hunter, golfer and he enjoyed fishing in the Grand River. He also enjoyed pool and darts. Other pastimes include listening to books on tape and working puzzles. He watched Jeopardy and the Guiding Light on a daily basis.

He is survived by Denise Winter of Taylorville, Il & Deb Winter of Piedmont, SD, Bobbi (Marvin) Gomez of Thornton, Co, Doug C (Jules) Winter of Plano, Tx, and Debbie (Josh) Stephens of Taylorville, Il. Great Nieces, Taryn Landers & Paige Gomez of Thornton, Co, Shaylee Ferguson of Grand Forks ND and Hattie Winter of Plano, Tx., great nephews, Austin Totten, Lucas & Alex Stephens all of Taylorville, Il. and George Winter of Plano, Tx. His Aunt Lavinia Winter Peters of Seattle, Wa., Uncle Fred Winter of Missoula, Mt. and Uncle Harvey Short, Escondido, Ca. and several cousins.

He is preceded in death by mom and dad, Phillip and Gladys (Short) Winter, nephew Terry Landers, grandparents, Floyd and Ella (Burdick) Short, Fred and Myrtle (Davis) Winter.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
