IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Duane Ellsworth
Lindquist
October 11, 1942 – December 7, 2015
Duane was born October 11, 1942, to Arthur and Bertha (Lillegard) Lindquist in Lemmon, SD. He was the fourth of six children and the first of two sons. The family lived on a farm /ranch and the children attended a one room school for the first 8 grades. Duane graduated from Lemmon High School in 1961.
After graduation, Duane worked doing odd jobs for multiple farms and ranches in the area. Eventually he started driving mail truck from Lemmon, SD, to Aberdeen, SD, which he continued doing for 15 years.
While driving the mail route, Duane began to buy cattle and to lease hay and pasture land. When his Uncle Arthur semi-retired and moved off the family ranch, Duane leased all his uncle's pasture land and purchased his cattle. He thus became a full time farmer/rancher. He always enjoyed ranching most.
In 1982, Duane married Helen Howe in Rapid City, SD. They lived on and worked the family homestead until 2011, when the ranch was recognized as a Century Farm. At that time, Duane retired and he and Helen moved to Sturgis, SD.
Duane had a special love for his nephews and nieces. He taught many of them to operate a swather, tractor, old pickup, and other farm machinery. He also enjoyed taking many of them fishing.
Duane E. Lindquist, 73, of Sturgis died Monday, December 7, 2015, at home in the company of his wife following a long illness.
Duane is survived by his wife, Helen; four sisters, Beverly (Marvin) Bail of St. Paul, MN, Audrey Kirkpatrick of Greendale, IN, Sylvia Engle of Hettinger, ND, and Shirley Dreiske of Lemmon, SD; and 22 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Myron.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, December 10, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Kerry Prendiville officiating at St. Martin's Chapel and a 2nd service will be Saturday, December 12, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. in Lemmon, SD, at the Spencer Memorial Church with Deacon Bill Dustman officiating.
