Duane John Meyer "DJ" was born December 17, 1972, in Sioux Falls, SD. The son of Ronald and Barbara (Swier) Meyer was raised in Brookings, SD. Shortly after, DJ's younger sister, Bobbi, joined the family. Growing up, DJ enjoyed T-ball, water skiing, and his dog, Buddy. DJ graduated from Brookings High School in 1991. DJ attended a vo-tech briefly after high school. He liked working with computers. DJ worked at various computer shops where he learned how to repair and build computers.
On February 20, 1995, DJ's son, Denali Paul, was born. DJ and Denali loved to spend time together. They enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, and "rock climbing." When Denali was young, he would repair computers just like dad.
DJ moved to the Black Hills area in the late nineties. He met Deborah (Debbie) Oedekoven in 1999 while they were both working at Silverado. The two have been together since. The couple was married in Lead, SD, on July 13, 2002, surrounded by friends and family. The couple hosted a potluck pig roast to celebrate their union. Eventually they made their home in Spearfish, SD.
DJ and Debbie enjoyed the outdoors. They spent many days outdoors whether it was rock climbing, biking, camping, star-gazing, and fishing. Some of their favorite camping spots were Horsethief and Deerfield lakes. They shared a passion for movies, especially the Star Wars saga.
DJ loved to work with computers. After he became unable to complete the delicate work, he would persuade Debbie to help him.
DJ loved beer. He loved to make beer and drink beer. He could talk for hours on what beer he had recently tried or what he was going to make next. This was a passion both he and Deb could enjoy together. After he became sick, you could find them making dark, IPA's, and pale ales. They even ventured into making wine for a little while, but they always went to making their beer.
In 2013, Yeuh, a German Shepherd, joined their family as a companion for DJ. DJ and Yeuh spent many days together. He would protect DJ from the pesky rabbits, squirrels, and people that would come to close to the house.
Duane John Meyer, 46, of Spearfish died at his residence on October 30, 2019.
DJ is survived by his wife, Deb, Spearfish, SD; son, Denali Meyer, Sioux Falls, SD; parents, Ronald and Barbara Meyer, Brookings, SD; sister, Bobbi Dangle (Travis) Volin, SD; brother-in-law, Adam Oedekoven, Portland, OR; sister-in-law, April Oedekoven-Halter (Kelly); nieces, Danielle and Grace Dangle; nephews, Vernon, Harold, and Franklin Halter; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Memorial services will be at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 3, 2019, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
