Obituary

It is with great sadness and love that we mourn the passing of Dwight Thomas Gray of Belle Fourche, S.D. on February 19, 2024, at 71 years of age. His battle with cancer was long and difficult at times, but he showed great courage and strength in facing his toughest challenges.

Dwight, better known as Tom to his family and friends, was born in Oakland, Ca., on October 24, 1952.

Tom served in the United States Air Force on Kincheloe AFB in Michigan from 1972-1976. His final rank was Sgt. when honorably discharged.

He was always active, never shied away from hard work. He enjoyed being outdoors and camping. He was the self-proclaimed champion of everything from frisbee throwing to cribbage. He had several careers over his lifetime. He installed and cleaned carpets, he was a baker, he did carpentry and maintenance. He had many skills, but he was most proud of the years that he worked a firefighter in the Airforce and in Canada.

Tom is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Dora Anthony, and Maurice Gray, his sister, Danica, and his stepmother, Sandra Gray. He is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Tracie; his children, Heather (Barry) Yakimchuk, Summer (Kelly) Boyson, and Joe (Wendy) Gray. He leaves behind his six grandchildren, Chase (Ally), Morgan (Tia), Branden, Bethany (Mack), Elijah, Emma, and his two great grandchildren, James and Wyatt. The loss will also be felt by his caring stepfamily, Chris (Roberta) and Shaun (Laura) as well as their 6 children. Tom has numerous other close family and friends that have brought love and laughter into his life.

Tom was a passionate man, he had strong opinions, and enjoyed lively conversations where he shared his opinions. He loved watching football, old westerns and Fox News. He loved his guitar, his dog, and being with friends and family. Despite his age and health, he had grand dreams and future plans with Tracie and talked about them until end.

There will be a grave site service at a later date at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Wounded Warriors Project.
