Obituary

Dwight McClaskey, 92, New Underwood, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2007, at St. John's Catholic Church in New Underwood, with the Rev. Bill Zandri officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Dwight was born July 28, 1914, at Exline, Iowa, to George and Marthy (McCoy) McClaskey. He attended the Exline Public Schools for 12 years and graduated with the class of 1932.

While in high school, Dwight learned the grocery and meat-cutting trade, and managed a store and meat market in his hometown for three years before moving to New Underwood, in March of 1935. He opened a service station and garage in New Underwood and ran this business for 34 years. In 1969, he obtained a highway mail contract route out of New Underwood and operated this route until June 1996.

Dwight married Kathleen Kochenderfer on May 11, 1940. To this union, three sons were born.

Dwight was a World War II veteran. He served with the 65th Armored F.A. in France, Belgium, and Germany. He attained the rank of First Sgt. He was very proud of his military service.

Dwight enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and camping. His favorite hobby was fishing and he spent many hours pursuing them.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; two sons, David, Caputa, and Bryan, Sturgis; one daughter-in-law, Rose and two granddaughters, all of Custer; five stepchildren and their spouses; three grandsons; and two great-grandsons, all of Nevada.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathleen; three brothers; one sister; and one son, Thomas.

Memorials have been established to the New Underwood Volunteer Fire Department and to the New Underwood School.
