Long-time resident of Central City and retired Homestake employee, Ed Mutchler, 75, passed away peacefully at his home early Friday morning, March 18, 2016, after a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Sturgis with Mr. Jim Lassle officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at the Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Edgar Alvin Mutchler was born in Deadwood on October 7, 1940, to Roland A. (Ray) Mutchler and Gertrude (Sheldon) Mutchler. He was the youngest of four children. Ed has remained in the Central City area most of his life. He married Tomie Lynn (Glover) Mutchler on December 12, 1958.
He worked for Homestake Gold Mine as a miner, shift boss, foreman, and Mine Rescue team member until his retirement in 1993. In his free time, Ed liked to hunt, motorcycle ride, fish, and waterski. He and Tomie traveled to Lake Havasu, AZ, in their motor home for winters since his retirement.
Ed is survived by his wife of 57 years, Tomie Lynn (Glover); their 3 children, Lynn (Mike) Hansen, Mike (Briget Achtien) Mutchler, and David (Peggy Sue Penning) Mutchler; his sister, Doris (Keith) Fox; his sister-in-law, Roberta (Vodopich) Mutchler; 12 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; brother, Raymond (Buzzy) Mutchler; and sister, Byra (Mutchler) Long.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the American Cancer Society and Hospice of the Northern Hills.
