Obituary

Edgar Wiedenmeyer of Spearfish passed away peacefully at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care Facility on February 12, 2014.

Edgar was born to Jacob and Martha (Hafner) Wiedenmeyer on May 13, 1926 in Kronthal, near Beulah, ND. He was baptized, confirmed and attended elementary school in that area. He spent his youth on the family farm. He worked at the Beulah Coal Mine and then at a mine in Wallace, ID.

Edgar was drafted into the Army in June of 1945. He told his family that his main job was guarding German prisoners. He was honorably discharged in November of 1946.

He returned to Beulah and worked as a mechanic at the Ford Garage. On March 11, 1951, he married Louise Lindeman. Edgar and Louise had four children and moved to the Black Hills in 1955. Edgar was employed by Homestake Mining Company in Lead, SD until his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He was active in Bethel Lutheran Church and sang in the choir. He was also active in the Union, served as a reserve officer for the Deadwood Police Department and was a member of the Lawrence County Search and Rescue Team. After retirement, he and Louise participated in Good Sam Camping and he was a caller for Whitewood Senior Center Bingo games. Edgar enjoyed playing cards with friends and family.

Edgar loved going to his children's church and school activities and later to his grandchildren's events.

He is survived by his wife Louise; his four children: James (Marlys) Wiedenmeyer, Kathy (Marvin) Maynard, Jacob Wiedenmeyer, and Karon (Gary) Larson; seven grandchildren: Kris (Brian) Haugen, Jennifer (Nate) Moriarty, Beth Maynard, Jeremy Larson, Jessica Larson, Amy Wiedenmeyer, and Sarah Wiedenmeyer; seven great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Edgar is survived by four sisters: Lorena Scheid, Mildred Heth, Delora Litzinger and Bernice Lindeman and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Herbert Wiedenmeyer.

Visitation will be noon until 8 p.m. on Monday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Stephan Sandness officiating. Burial follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorials have been established to the Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Spearfish and the Crook County Senior Care Facility in Sundance, WY.
