Edith E. Toth passed away at Spearfish Regional Hospital, Monday, May 14, 2012, with her family at her side.
Edith was born in Cambria, WY, May 12, 1921, to Louis and Marianna (De Faccio), Italian immigrants from Moimacco, Italy. She was the youngest child of five children born to her parents, including a sister, Lena, a brother, John, and twin sisters, Elizabeth (Liz) and Louisa. In 1922, Edith's family moved to Indiana where they lived for several years, eventually moving back to Newcastle, WY, where she attended school, graduating from high school in 1940. She worked as a telephone operator for number of years following her graduation. On May 3, 1942, she married PVC Peter E. Toth. WWII was looming and for the duration of the war, Edith and her husband were separated except for brief visits until the war ended. To this union, five children were born, four daughters and a son who passed away at birth.
The family moved to Moskee, WY, and lived there until 1958 when they moved to Spearfish, SD. Edith began working at The Moccasin Shop, a business owned by Jim Langer, and her 'part time' job spanned more than 44 years as the business evolved into two shops and factory under the ownership of Black Hills Artcraft. Edith was involved in many aspects of the business from clerk to making the unique jewelry, Gems by Jim, which were sold world wide. Edith continued to work until she was 82, when the Black Hills Artcraft closed its doors.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and belonged to a card club for a number of years. Edith was devoted to her four daughters and their families and to the end, they were the most important things in her life.
Edith was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Pete in 1981; infant son, Robert Mitchel; a brother, three sisters; and her parents.
Survivors include: Nancy (Larry) Cassidy, Sundance, WY, Karen (Curtis) Walters, Sturgis, SD, Pat (Brent) Libby, West Baldwin, ME, and Penny Toth, Rapid City, SD; grandchildren, Mike and Monica Cassidy, Stevensville, MT, Steve and Cherie Cassidy and family, Condon, MT, Lee and Angel Walters and family, Honolulu, HI, Corey and Kristi Walters and family, Wilmington, DE, Cassie and George Romano, Nanuet, NY, Josh Libby and family, West Baldwin, ME, Shane Libby and Leon, Auburn, CA, Kyle Libby and Vanessa, West Baldwin, ME; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, May 19, 2012. Inurnment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery at 10:00 A.M., Monday, May 21, 2012.
