Ed was born on July 14,1968 at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, SD. He was born to Ronald and Judy (Vansickel) Joens. He spent the first part of his life in Fort Pierre before he and his parents moved to Sturgis in October 1969. He lived in Sturgis until he was 2, then he and his parents moved to Black Hawk where he finished elementary school and then went on to attend Dakota Middle School and Central High School. He graduated high school in 1986. After completing high school he worked for a year on his grandparent's ranch in Opal. After his year hiatus, he decided to return to the classroom and receive a degree in computer aided drafting from Western Dakota Tech. After he received his degree he decided to move to Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He spent 2 years in Wisconsin working at Menards before deciding to move back to the Black Hills. He worked in Rapid City for a short time at Dunham Associates before he landed in the Lead area, and worked at Wharf Mining. He also worked for several trucking companies including Flack Trucking and at his father's construction company. He hauled dirt, gravel and ran heavy equipment.

In 1998 he was married to Lora Fish. He then went on to have 3 children, Donald (25), Heather (24), and Jessica (20). In 1999 he and his wife moved to the northern edge of Black Hawk, where he lived the remainder of his life. They divorced and in 2017 he was remarried to Sloan Hart.

He enjoyed fishing, playing pool, watching racing, football and westerns. He enjoyed hunting at his grandparent's ranch in Opal when hunting season rolled around every year. He loved to ride his motorcycle until he broke his leg.

Edward Glen Joens ,56, passed away on January 28th 2025 at Rapid City Hospice House, along with a host of family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Sloan; his parents, (Ronald and Judy); his children, (Donald, Heather and Jessica); an uncle, (Chuck Vansickel); aunt, (Marie Vansickel), and grandmother (Hazel Vansickel) . He was preceded in death by his cousin (Gilbert "Smudge" Diaz) ,aunt (Janet Vansickel),uncle (Merle Vansickel), grandparents (Charles Vansickel, Glen and Alvina Joens) and great-grandparents (Oscar and Juanita Vansickel,Joy and Ralph Short, and Hans and Alvina Joens).
