Edward L. Nyberg, 61, Sturgis, died Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the Fort Meade VA Hospital.
Visitation will be Wednesday noon until 9 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, November 28, 2008, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Skip Smith officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
Ed was born February 26, 1947 at Deadwood, SD, to Ernest and Ellen "Pat" (McDermott) Nyberg.
After completing his education he enlisted in the US Navy on January 10, 1968. He served his country honorably in Viet Nam. He was honorably discharged and returned to South Dakota.
Ed went to work for the Sturgis Police Department in December of 1973.
He married Penny Gillies at Bear Butte Valley on October 11, 1974.
Ed served as a police officer in Sturgis until his retirement in May of 1993. He retired as the captain of the department.
Ed loved the outdoors where he could fly fish and hunt. He also enjoyed making the rounds to see his coffee buddies and friends. He was greatly loved and will be missed every minute of every day!
Survivors include his wife, Penny Nyberg, Sturgis; daughter Jennifer (Brahim) Nyberg Doummi, Gillette, WY; sister Dee (Ron) Stringer, Belgrade, MT; grandchildren, Amira and Samir Doummi.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
