Elsie Grace (Larson) Muehl passed away on Friday, April 25, 2014 at the age of 97. Elsie was born August 17, 1916 on the family farm near Erwin, South Dakota. She was the oldest of seven children born to John and Clara (Jensen) Larson. In 1919 her family moved to Potter County and homesteaded near Gettysburg where Elsie grew up. In spite of the tough times growing up during the "dirty thirties" and farm work required of all family members, she still managed to enjoy her school years. An honor she was most proud of was being selected to attend the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago when she was 15 years old. After graduation in 1936 from Gettysburg High School she went on to attend Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls. During this time she met Carl Muehl whom she married in 1938. Elsie and Carl remained in Sioux Falls for a time before moving to Vista, California where they owned and operated a chicken ranch and Carl worked for Boeing Aircraft and as a fireman at Camp Pendleton during WWII. After three years in California they returned to South Dakota and farmed near Gettysburg until 1954 when they moved to Sturgis. They owned and operated Carl's Confectionary from 1954 to 1967. Elsie then worked as a bookkeeper for Duane's Electrical and later as front office supervisor at the Sturgis Hospital. After retiring from the hospital Elsie and Carl enjoyed the times and travels with friends as members of the Winnebago Club. Elsie remained active as a volunteer with the hospital auxiliary and as a long time RSVP member Elsie spent many hours volunteering at the Senior Citizens Center; serving as Treasurer for a time. She looked forward to her time as a volunteer for the Sturgis Rally for many years. Elsie was a devoted parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and was a long time member of the Holy Family Circle. Elsie is survived by four daughters, Marlene Gilzow, Sturgis, Bernie (Alan) Miller, Gillette, WY, Linda (Jim) Capser, Billings, MT, Jeri (Joe) Chaney, Reno, NV; one son, Bill (Diane) Muehl, Cheyenne, WY; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a sister, Phyllis Newland, Rapid City; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Muehl; two grandchildren; one great grandchild; her parents, John and Clara Larson; three brothers; and two sisters. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Black Hills Funeral Home, with a Christian Wake Service to follow. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10:00 am, Thursday, May 8, 2014 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Rev. Arnold Kari presiding. Burial will follow at St. Aloysius Cemetery in Sturgis. A memorial has been established to the Sturgis Senior Citizens Center, 919 2nd St., Sturgis, SD.
