Obituary

Elsie May Price Nelson, 96, Sturgis and formerly of Newell, passed away Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at the Lippold Hospice Suite at Sturgis Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be Friday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Roger Monson officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery.

Elsie was born June 3, 1913, on a homestead at Opal, SD, to Joe E. and Ida Mae (Crites) Price. Her early education began in country schools in the Opal area via horseback or horse-drawn sled with her father, who was also the teacher.

She attended high school in Faith, SD, and attended Spearfish Normal, where she earned her Teaching Certificate. She taught rural schools in western South Dakota for many years.

In 1942, Elsie married C. B. Tinsley and they lived in Wilton, Mandan, and Bismarck, ND, where they operated a business. When he retired, they moved to a small acreage near Whitewood, SD, and then to Newell, SD, in 1959, where they raised sheep. C B passed away in 1961.

Elsie married C. B. Nelson in 1963. She continued living in Newell and teaching rural schools. Mr. Nelson passed away in 1985.

She lived in Newell until April of 2006 when she moved to Foothills Assisted Living in Sturgis.

Besides being a teacher, she was a gardener and was very interested in politics and tackling any job that needed done. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Newell and a long-time member of SDEA.

She is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Walt and Thora Price, Sturgis, and Harley and Ellen Price, Opal, SD, and one sister and brother-in-law, Opal and Don Grubl, Sturgis. Elsie is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a host of great-nieces and nephews; and by Ron Anderson and his staff at Foothills Assisted Living in Sturgis.

Preceding her in death were both husbands; her parents; three brothers, Maldwin Price, Graydon Price, and Stanley Price; one sister, Olive Talley; her brother-in-law, Maurice Talley; sister-in-law, Clarice Price; two nephews, Vaughn Price and Roy Price; one infant niece, Donna May Talley; and two great-nephews, Riley Haines and Coy Price.

She will be greatly missed by her family as she kept track of her whole clan.

Memorials have been established to Hospice of the Northern Hills and Foothills Assisted Living.
