Emma Olive (Berry) Thorson, 64, of Newcastle, Wyoming—formerly of Almont, North Dakota—passed away on Monday, July 27, 2026 following a long and courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis and its many complications, surrounded by the love of family and friends. Born on March 13, 1962, in Bismarck, North Dakota, Emma was the first of five children born to David and Lorraine Berry.

Emma grew up in Dickinson, New Salem, and Almont, graduating from Almont High School in 1980. Shortly after graduation, she proudly enlisted in the United States Army, serving as a finance specialist. Her time in the service helped to shape her strong work ethic and deep appreciation for those around her.

After completing her service, Emma reconnected with a longtime friend, Casey Thorson. Their friendship grew into a deep and enduring partnership, and they were married on December 30, 1985. Together, they made their home in Newcastle, Wyoming, where Emma became a warm and familiar presence in the community. Over the years, she held various roles, built lasting friendships, and remained closely connected to many of the people she cherished back in North Dakota.

Emma and Casey shared countless adventures together. From hiking and snowmobiling in the Black Hills, to gathering firewood to heat their home, to raising their pets with love. Though they did not have children of their own, Emma adored her nieces and nephews, cherishing family gatherings and the joy they brought into her life. Her warm heart, generous spirit, and ability to make others feel valued will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Emma will be missed deeply by her husband of 40 years, Casey Thorson; sisters Nadine Berry, Bismarck, ND; Roxanne (Kent) Featherstone, Mott, ND; Peggy (Allen) Weiss, New Salem, ND; mother-in-law, Bernice Thorson, New Salem, ND; brother-in-law, Dale Thorson, Newcastle; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Thorson, Arkansas City, KS and Sharon (Gordon) Rittenbach, Turtle Lake, ND; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Lorraine Berry; her father in law, Eugene Thorson; sister-in-law, Peggy (Thorson) Emil; and an infant brother.

Per Emma and Casey’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at Fort Meade National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota.

The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at Weston County Health Services and Fort Meade VA Medical Center for the wonderful care they have given Emma over the years.
