Obituary

Enid Arlene Crockford, 100 years old, went home to be with the LORD on July 15, 2021, at her home in Vale, SD, after a long and joyful life. She enriched the lives of her family members and countless neighbors and strangers with her gentle and loving spirit.  Enid walked closely with her LORD and lived out her faith every day.

Enid was born on February 7, 1921, near Paris, IA, to George and Emma Falcon Lickingteller. She was the 4th of 5 children, Vivian (stillborn), Lewis, Doris, Enid, and Orlin. In 1926, she moved with her family to South Dakota and farmed at Murdo.  In 1932, the family moved to their farm north/east of Newell, SD.  She completed her grade school education and graduated from Newell High School in 1938.

She married Loyal Lee Alexander in 1939, in Sturgis, SD. They farmed near Vale, SD. Together they had four children, Dale, Donald, Bernita, and Betty. Later in summer of 1950, the family moved to Lead, SD.  Loyal worked in the Homestake Gold Mine. Their fifth child, Clarice, was born in Deadwood, SD, later that fall. In 1952, the family purchased their first home on Houston Street in Lead, SD.  On November 13, 1953, Loyal was fatally injured in an underground mining accident and died a few hours later at the Homestake Hospital.

Enid worked several jobs that allowed her to be home as much as possible with her children. She also continued her education by attending several night school classes including typing, bookkeeping, sewing, and First Aid Class.  She was employed as a Bright Cutter for the FL Thorpe Jewelry Co. in Deadwood, SD. She also was active in First Baptist Church, in Lead, SD, where she followed the Lord in baptism and served as a Sunday School Teacher. She was active in the Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts and served as Den Mother and Troop Leader for neighborhood kids. She ran for Lawrence County Auditor in November, 1956.

On December 29, 1956, she married Lillford Burleigh Harr in Lead, SD, and the family moved to Vale, SD, where they lived on the Harr Farm. Two more children were born to this union, Leona "Tweeter" and George Harr. Enid not only cared for her family, she was very involved in the operation of the farm and livestock production. Enid was known for her hospitality and her ability to stretch a meal to welcome whoever showed up at mealtime. She had a large garden and sold produce and sweet corn to local stores. She raised chickens and geese and sold fryers and eggs.  She was a prolific canner and canned nearly a hundred jars of fruit, vegetables, pickles, and jellies every year. She was an excellent baker and prepared all the family's bread products. She also tended the large apple orchard and sold apples in the fall. She was active in her children's activities, local extension club, and she participated in many community activities, including serving on the Vale School Board.  Lillford passed away on October 25, 1983.

She also had great compassion for people in need and helped several families in the community care for their sick and dying relatives. She cared for her husband (Leo) until his death, both of her parents at the end of their life, and also her father-in-law during his final days.

She married Joe Crockford, a lifetime friend, on May 16, 1987, at the Vale Lutheran Church and lived on the Crockford farm.  They enjoyed traveling together to visit family and friends and took part in group trips. Joe made sure Enid never missed a school event, rodeo, wedding, graduation, or school program of their large family. Together they loved attending the Newell Labor Day Celebration and family events. Joe passed away August 23, 2003, and Enid continued to live on the farm until her death. She passed away on July 15, 2021, surrounded by family.

She is survived by 5 of her children: Donald (Mary) Alexander, Bernita (Jerry) Shuck, Betty Jones, Leona "Tweeter" Henseler, George (Nadene) Harr;  daughter-in-law, Barbara Alexander; step-children: Charles Harr, Connie Watkins, Jerry (Julie) Crockford; daughter-in-law, Carol Crockford, Hazel (Danny) Adams, Sheri Adams, and Jess (Becky) Crockford; nineteen grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren; and twenty-four great-great-grandchildren; sixteen step-grandchildren; twenty-four step-great grandchildren; six step-great-great grandchildren.
