"Sallie" Palmer
January 4, 1934 – February 22, 2017
Sallie was born January 4, 1934, in Yankton, SD, to Harold W. and Ethelyn G. Kjeldseth. Sallie grew up and attended school in Yankton and Woonsocket. In 1950, she married Ervin Palmer. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Huron where Erv worked at the Daily Plainsman. In 1962, Sallie and Erv purchased the Lake Andes Wave newspaper and worked together there until moving to Rapid City in 1976. There, they continued to work together operating a bakery and later owned and operated Palmer Printing. Sallie also worked as a Decorating and Drapery Consultant at the Linoleum and Carpet Center in Rapid City.
Sallie and Erv purchased a ranch near Whitewood, SD, in 1986 which they operated with their son, Dan. In 2000, they retired and moved to Sturgis, and most winters were spent in Mesa, AZ.
Sallie was an avid bowler for many years and enjoyed crafting, painting, refinishing furniture, quilting, and sewing. Over the years, she was a member of community clubs, quilting and sewing clubs, and the Red Hat Society.
Sallie and Erv were married for 67 years and raised two children.
Ethelyn A. "Sallie" Palmer, 83, Sturgis, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, Erv; son, Dan (Heidi) Palmer, Whitewood; daughter, Lana (Keith) Culver, Newcastle, WY; one grandson, Justin (Dawn); and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Clyde Vaughn; an infant daughter; and three step-sisters.
Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 2, 2017, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Jenene Earl officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Yankton.
A memorial has been established in Sallie's honor.
