Obituary

Etta Mae Bateman, 88, Rapid City, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2019.
Etta Mae was born January 28, 1930, in Sturgis to John and Virginia (Conlon) Szymanski. She was married to Maynard Louis Backens from November 6, 1949, until his death on May 11, 1968; they had two daughters, Lorna and Charmaine. Etta Mae married Charles Clinton Bateman on June 17, 1989, in Rapid City. Over their 30 years together, Etta Mae and Charlie had many good times, traveling, and riding horses, trikes, and motorcycles. She felt a deep connection to the land and the Black Hills.
Etta Mae is survived by her husband, Charlie; two daughters, Lorna (Gary) Pedersen, and Charmaine (Thomas Randolph) Backens; and stepdaughter, Cindy (Ron) Wickham; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Maynard; her parents, John and Virginia; and her siblings, Jack (Carol) Szymanski, George (Bernice) Szymanski, and Virginia (Bob) Scherer.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 15, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
