Eugene S.
Derby
May 2, 1940 — Nov 25, 2015
Vale, SD | Eugene S. Derby died November 25, 2015 from complications of ALS. Born May 2, 1940 in Rapid City to Lester and Marie (Paklin) Derby, he grew up in the Lead-Deadwood area with his eight siblings. He attended Nevada Gulch School and graduated from Lead High School. Eugene married JoAnn Werlinger on April 11, 1963 in Lead. Together they raised their children in Nevada Gulch. In 1988 they moved to Vale, SD where he resided until his death. Eugene worked as a logger most of his life, and later as a truck driver and mechanic at Derby Trucking, and retired from construction in 2008. Eugene enjoyed working on his farm, raising sheep and attending to his garden, helping and sharing time with the neighbors. He spent countless hours giving his grandchildren 4-wheeler rides, taking them fishing, reading books to them, caring for the animals and they always wanted to be right at his side whatever he was doing. He meant the world to his children and grandchildren. Although a quiet man, he always made sure to "egg his kids on" when they were being mischievous. He not only made sure he had lots of time with his own children, but also all of the neighbor kids, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Laurel Welch. Eugene is survived by his wife, JoAnn; sons, Tim (Janet), ND, Todd, Claremont, MN, Ted (Rose), Watertown, SD, Tobby (Jen), Sturgis, SD, and Troy (Lacey), Gillette, WY; daughters, Gina Ferris (Gordy Kraut), Wall, SD and Ginger Payne, Sturgis; ten grandchildren, Nick, Frank, Brittany, Brier, Brooke, Andrew, Brandon, Emily, Mahlia, Triton; one great-granddaughter, Addisen; brothers, Albert (Rose), Stanley, Bill, Jerry (Mary Ann), Bobby (Vivian), Tommy (Patty) and Jimmy (Pat), along with a host of nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held 11:00 am Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at Life Spring Wesleyan Church in Sturgis with Reverend Dan Ziebarth officiating. Inurnment will follow at 1:30 pm at Mountain Lawn Cemetery near Lead, SD. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Hospice of the Northern Hills.
