Nemo - Eugene (Gene) F. Dargatz, 69, passed away Wednesday evening, April 16, 2014 at Rapid City Regional Hospital, after an eight year battle with a disease called Myasthenia Gravis. Gene was born July 8, 1944 to John and Anna Dargatz in Webster, SD. He graduated from Huron High School in 1962, served in the South Dakota National Guard from 1965 to 1971. He worked for Armour Foods in Huron, SD for over 20 years, owned and operated an auto repair shop in Huron for several years and operated the fixed base of operation on the Huron Airport from 1982 to 1987 where he earned his pilot's license and became an aviation mechanic. In 1991, he began a lawn care service in Huron called Lawn Proz, which he sold several years later to retire. He married the love of his life, Elaine Brooks on August 14, 1965 in Huron, SD. Gene will be remembered as a man who could do and/or fix anything. He was a mechanic, a carpenter, a welder, an electrician, a plumber, a pilot, a machinist, or better known as a "Jack of all trades". His passions were his family, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, building stuff in the garage and years of racing, including cars and snowmobiles. He will truly be missed by his family and friends. Gene is survived by his wife Elaine, of Nemo, SD; daughter, Sheila (Jeff) Renner, Huron; son, Tony (Desaree) Dargatz, Sturgis; and his 4 precious grandkids, Brandon Renner of Huron, and Jordann, Ethan and Anna Dargatz of Wolsey; sisters, Lorraine (William)Wharton, Huron, and Bernice (Don) Grogan, Pueblo West, CO; brothers, William (Shirley) Dargatz, Huron and Jerry (Jan) Dargatz, MN; mother-in-law, Opal Brooks, Wessington Springs; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Dargatz; grandparents; and father-in-law, Donald Brooks. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Monday, April 21, 2014 with a Christian Wake Service to follow at Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 am, Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Rev. Bob Baden presiding. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Nemo Cemetery.
