Eva D. Carter, 81, Piedmont, died Tuesday, January 1, 2008, in the Lippold Hospice Unit at Sturgis Regional Hospital.
Eva was born April 3, 1926, in Lawton, ND, to Matt and Lulu (Patron) Aijala. The family moved to Minnesota where they lived for several years before moving to Lead, SD. Eva graduated from Lead High School. Her father, a minister, performed her 1st Communion at the Lutheran Church in Lead. Her confirmation was learned in the Finnish language.
Eva married Wayland Carter in Dupree, SD, on February 17, 1946. The couple lived at various place in the western US working on ranches.
She was very devoted to her family and church and her women's Bible study. Eva loved to garden, especially flowers and roses. She retired and moved to Piedmont 14 years ago.
Survivors include her sons, Neil (Mary) Carter, Metolius, OR, and Mark (Julie) Carter, Greeley, CO; her grandchildren, Dawn (Lloyd) Luther, Samantha (Ryan) Mozingo, Owen (Elizabeth) Carter, Costa (Wayne) Martin, Mason (Cheerie) Carter, Phillip Carter, and Suellen Carter; three sisters, Mamie Boltz, Deadwood, SD, Helen (Lyle) Vandenberg, Deadwood, SD, and Francine (Bill) Hudson, Vale, SD; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Wade, six sisters, and four brothers.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 7, 2008, at Foothills Baptist Church in Piedmont with Rev. Mike Crippen and Rev. Wayland Holbrook officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
