Obituary

Eva Lynn DeVries was born April 28, 1959 to Clayton "Steve" and Karen DeVries in Hendricks, MN. She spent most of her childhood in the Brookings and White, SD area, or in the passenger seat of her father's semi. Eva lived life very much on her own terms. She seamlessly transitioned from troubled youth to amazing mother with the birth of three children, showing them with action that your mistakes don't define you and showering them in unconditional love for the rest of her years. She was very active in her children's lives. She attended ball games, wrestling meets, and rodeos all over the country, constantly supporting and encouraging her children. She spent time with Rushmore Little League, both as a coach and on the board of directors. She worked tirelessly as a rodeo secretary, and was always amongst the loudest voices in the bleachers.

Eva entered the professional world with very little experience. Through hard work and perseverance, she worked her way from a front desk receptionist to an executive, as a director for Sodak Gaming. After many years in the world of business, she returned to college and graduated from BHSU with a degree in Human Services in her 50s, fulfilling a lifelong promise to herself. She used this degree at the Department of Social Services, looking out for children, working her dream job. She further utilized her degree working with senior citizen volunteers at Black Hills State University.

In 2014 she met the love of her life, James Doyle. They shared a love of travel and spent as much time as they could attending concerts. They married on June 11, 2016. In 2017 the cancer she thought she had beat years before returned with a vengeance. With a grim prognosis and given months to live, she battled hard for over four years.

Eva loved baking, attending her grandkids' events, listening to music, a good bottle of wine, home improvement projects, taking care of others, and cheering for Jim and others at the softball fields.

She is survived by her husband of five years, Jim; three children, Seth (Elizabeth) Monson, Rapid City, Karron (Randy) Zopp, Nemo, and Anna (Monty) Luthy, Rapid City; two stepchildren, Lyndsay (James) Lunders, VA, and Steven (Susan) Doyle, Box Elder; sister, Missy (Scott) Ludwig, MN; brother, Jason (Tammy) DeVries, Rapid City; sister, Trudi Paulson, Box Elder; fifteen beloved grandchildren; father and mother-in-law, Merlin and Mary Jane Doyle, Wall; sister-in-law, Barb (Joe) Croell, Sundance; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Clayton DeVries; her mother, Karen Moen, and many other cherished loved ones.

A celebration of life will take place at the City Park Picnic Shelters on Canyon Street in Spearfish, SD on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at 10:30 a.m.
