Evelyn Grace (Long) Hale, 86, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, in Sturgis, SD.
Evelyn was born on March 26, 1934, in Kadoka, SD, to Jay and Grace Long. She grew up on their ranch at White Owl, SD. She graduated from Sturgis High School in 1952, and went onto Black Hills Teacher College in Spearfish, SD; where she earned a teaching degree. After receiving her teaching certificate, Evelyn taught school at the Atall School.
On May 23, 1954, Evelyn married Lester Hale in Sturgis, SD. They were blessed with four children; Darla, Sandy, James, and Christina. Evelyn worked beside Lester in ranching north of Union Center until around 2012; when they moved to Sturgis, SD.
Evelyn was involved in the community. She belonged to the Meade County Cowbelles, Stoneville Steadies Extension Club, and was a 4-H leader for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, and made many beautiful items over the years. Evelyn loved to play cards with family and friends. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Sturgis.
Evelyn is survived by her children: Darla (Ken) Sisel of Gillette, WY; Sandy (Becky) Hale of Rapid City, SD; James (Teresa) Hale of White Owl, SD; Christina (Duane) Aaberg of Gillette, WY; nine grandchildren, Stephanie Leonard, Brett (Cristin) Hale, Rae Hale, Colby (Chelsie) Aaberg, Tye (Kasey) Hale, Wes Sisel, Tee (Alex) Hale, Carley (Joe) Blair, Bailey (Shawn) Myers; two step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Christy Sisel; and ten great-grandchildren.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; Jay and Grace Long; her husband, Lester; and her brother, Benjamin. She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, SD.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, SD, with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. A private burial service will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the White Owl Community Center.
