She lived, she loved, she laughed, she cried, she died
Evelyn Ruth (Cooper) Lushbough, 94, died peacefully in her sleep Dec. 26, 2011 at Sturgis Regional Senior Care, Sturgis, S.D.
As were her wishes, Evelyn has been cremated. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, Sturgis. Interment at Bear Butte Cemetery will follow the service.
Known to both family and friends as "Grandma Bough", she was born Dec. 23, 1917 in a sod house near Faith, S.D., to Mabel Alice Thoreson Cooper and Clarence William Cooper. She grew up in Meade and Butte County and attended elementary school in Nisland and Piedmont. The family moved to Hill City, S.D., where she graduated from high school in 1935.
Evelyn married Wesley Lushbough June 5, 1937, at the Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, S.D. The couple lived in Rapid City and Newell and in 1952 moved to Spearfish, South Dakota, as a stay-at-home mom, she raised a son and twin daughters. The Lushbough's moved to Belle Fourche after Wesley's retirement in 1969, then to a rural home near St. Onge in 1972 and finally to Sturgis in 1998.
Evelyn was a member of Modern Woodmen of America for 69 years.
During her life, Evelyn managed food service businesses in Rapid City, operated the family shoe repair business in Newell until the end of WWII and cooked at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish. She also assisted remodeling several of the family's homes.
While in St. Onge, Evelyn enjoyed country living but her joy was occasionally taking care of infant and pre-school children of friends in the community.
Evelyn's smile and generous spirit will be missed by all who knew her and were privileged to call her mom, grandma, "Grandma Bough", great-grandma, aunt or friend.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, son, great-grandson, and son-in-law. As the seventh of ten children, she was the sole surviving member of the Cooper family.
She is survived by her twin daughters, Lavina Goddard, Sturgis, and Lavera Moum (Ken), Topeka, Kan.; grandchildren, Todd Goddard (Janelle), Prairie City; Tammy Derschan, Sioux Falls; John Lushbough (Liza), Rapid City; James Lushough (Katie), Rapid City; Susan Serhienko (Colin), Bottineau, N.D.; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial has been established to the American Heart Association.
