Flavis Bertrand, 92, Newell, died Thursday, October 7, 2010, at his residence in Newell, SD.

Visitation will be Tuesday from noon until 8:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to the rosary service.

A rosary will be offered at 9:30 a.m.Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newell. A mass follows at 10:30 a.m. with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will be at the Hope Cemetery in Newell.

Flavis was born on the old family homestead south of Clark in 1918 to Lexzy and Myrtle (Mack) Bertrand. His first education was in a one-room country school after which he graduated from Clark High School.

Flavis worked one season as a harvest hand and then decided that there must be something better out west. He wandered out to California where he remained for the next forty years; He met and married the girl who would be his helpmate for the next 66 years, Eleanor Tomich. They returned to South Dakota in 1977 to enjoy the peace and quiet.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor Bertrand, Newell; one brother; two sons and two daughter-in-laws; one daughter and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, two sisters, and one brother.

A memorial has been established to St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church or the choice of the donor.
