Obituary

Floy Allene Washburn, 89, Spearfish, died Thursday, February 26, 2009, at Tuk-R-Inn Assisted Living in Spearfish.

Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 2, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche with Rev. Gail Arnold officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Floy was born May 19, 1919, at Albion, MT, to Leonard and Sarah Anne (Ward) Dye. She grew up in Montana and received her one-year teaching certificate from Spearfish Normal in 1939. She taught at several country schools, her first being Hand County, SD. She then taught in Albion, where she rode her horse to school. Floy married Keith Lester Washburn in Hardin, MT, on June 1, 1941. While Keith served in England during WWII, Floy moved to Boardman, OR, where she again taught school. When Keith returned, they spent 8 years on their ranch on Butte Creek in Montana. Floy returned to teaching in 1954 until they moved to Mott, ND, where she worked for MDU. They bought a ranch in the Arpan area. She continued to teach while she also attended school. Floy received her BS in Elementary Education in 1973 from Black Hills Teachers College. Floy taught at the Fruitdale School, the Ingersoll School, and then at the Belle Fourche Elementary School, retiring from the Belle Fourche school system.

Floy was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche and taught Sunday School, Bible School, and helped organized the photo directories. She was also a member of the Arts Council, Butte County Historical Society, Butte County Council on Aging, Butte County Concert Series, Belle Fourche Senior Citizen's Center and enjoyed directing the "Mock Weddings." Floy was a member of the Belle Fourche Hospital Auxiliary, was active in the Ingersoll all-school reunion, Telecare, and Meals on Wheels. She was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Pi Phi, SDEA, and RSVP. Floy was honored as the parade co-marshall for the 77th Black Hills Roundup. She was also honored by the "Floy Washburn Day" and by being selected as the Belle Fourche Education Association Teacher of the Month.

She is survived by two daughters, LeAnn Washburrn, Bend, OR, and Allene (Don) Hanam, Parker, CO; three grandchildren, Kent and Troy Huffman and Nathan (Jen) Hanam; two great-grandchildren, Caleb Huffman and Amanda Hanam; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; grandson, Jeremy; two brothers, James "J.O." Dye and Robert Dye; one sister, Virginia Dye.

A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Northern Hills.
