Obituary

Kelly was born on February 12, 1921, to Jesse and Francis (Nabors) Kelly in Pine Hill, Alabama.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was selected for pilot training becoming a torpedo bomber pilot flying the TBM-3 Avenger in World War II attached to aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La (CV 38). While in the Pacific Theater, he was highly decorated receiving the Navy Cross during the battle of Kure Island. Following World War II, Kelly earned the air gunnery record for the Grumman F - 9F6 swept wing Cougar. He continued to serve in the Navy retiring in 1964 as a Lieutenant Commander. Following his naval career, he was inducted into the Legion of Valor.

Kelly married the love of his life, Marguerite Clarke, on June 2, 1948 after knowing each other for only four months. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage, had five children, lived in and traveled to many places, before settling in Sturgis, South Dakota in 1977. Kelly is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Fonville McWhorter Kelly, 95, passed away peacefully on March 9 with his family by his side.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite, children, Michelle Wheatley (Jim), Sherry, Michael (Deborah), Kim, Shaun (Jennifer), Six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Kelly is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Meet at the chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery. Services will be held Monday, March 14 at 9 AM at Black Hills National Cemetery, 20901 Pleasant Valley Dr., Sturgis, SD.
