Obituary

Frances Antonia "Toni" Haley, 88, Sturgis, died Sunday, December 21, 2008, at the Fort Meade VA Hospital.

Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. A wake and rosary begins at 7:00 p.m.

Burial with military honors will be at 9:00 a.m. at the Black Hills National Cemetery on Friday. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may gather at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to leaving for the Cemetery.

A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 26, 2008, at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Fr. Arnold Kari officiating.

Toni was born July 29, 1920, at Marcus, SD, to James and Frances (Sluka) Koss. She grew up in Marcus where she attended school. She graduated from Sturgis High School. Toni graduated from St. John's School of Nursing in 1943. She was a nurse for over 30 years working at the Rapid City hospitals and serving overseas in the Army Nurse Corps with the 98th Infantry in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon her honorable discharge she continued to work at hospitals and for various doctors.

After her sister, Ruth, died she raised Ruth's children, Janet and James Kimball, as her own and they considered her their mother.

She married Maynard L. Kidd in the early 50's and they later divorced. She married Elof Mattson in 1964. He died in 1969. Toni married Francis W. Haley in 1971. She helped him in the real estate sales and auction services. He died in 2003.

Toni was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, the VFW and American Legion in Sturgis. She was also a member of the Meade County Senior Center, AARP, and the Doe Drove #33 in Rapid City.

Survivors include Janet Marie Kimball, Rapid City; James A. Kimball, West Hollywood, CA; stepdaughter, Micky (Vince) Wienk, Spearfish; and stepsons, Kenneth Mattson and Robert Mattson, San Diego, CA;

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and five sisters.

Memorials have been established to the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
