Frank Francis Burckhard, 80, Sturgis, died Saturday, January 29, 2011, at the Fort Meade VA Hospital.
Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. A wake service begins at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2, 2011, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Fr. Arnold Kari officiating. Burial with military honors, provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard, will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Frank was born November 16, 1930, at Linton, ND, to Antone and Mary (Scherr) Burckhard. He attended school in Linton and after the family moved to Belle Fourche, he completed his schooling. He worked on the family farm and also for neighbors. He was employed at the Homestake Gold Mine before being drafted into the US Army and also after his honorable discharge.
Frank married Phyllis Henwood on March 3, 1956, at Belle Fourche. They returned to farm until moving to Sturgis where Frank was employed at MDU for over 29 years. After his retirement, he enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, camping, and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Burckhard, Sturgis; sons, Francis Burckhard, Sturgis, John Burckhard, Sturgis, Mike (Theresa) Burckhard, Park City, KS, and Gary (Katrine) Burckhard, Upton, WY; brothers, Sebastian (Darlene) Burckhard, Belle Fourche, and Victor (Dorothy) Burckhard, Rapid City; sisters, Pauline Dacar, Belle Fourche, Rose (Jim) Green, Belle Fourche, Jeannette Smith, Redding, CA, Jeanne (Rob) Thompson, Willows, CA, Victoria Bear, Red Bluff, CA, and Antonia (Rick) Carpenter, Oroville, CA; and two grandsons, Dean and Jaspper Burckhard, Upton, WY.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Steve; and three sisters, Irene, Frances and Eva.
A memorial has been established to the Ft. Meade Hospice Unit.
