Obituary

Frank Charles Frey, 82, Sturgis, died Thursday, August 4, 2011, at the Fort Meade VA Hospital.

Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 14, 2011, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. A rosary begins at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 15, 2011, at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Fr. Arnold Kari officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Frank was born May 5, 1929, at East St. Louis, Illinois. He and his family moved to Sturgis when he was very young. He first attended the Gullickson country school near his grandparents' farm. Frank graduated from St. Martin's Academy in Sturgis.

While attending school, he helped on the family farm, drove truck, and worked at Doran's Grocery. Following graduation, he returned to the farm before being drafted into the US Army. After his honorable discharge, Frank returned home and went to work for Homestake.

Frank married Nancy Follette on November 3, 1957, in Sturgis. They lived in Whitewood and Lead before making Sturgis their permanent home.

After leaving Homestake, Frank worked for Wheeler's Post and Pole for many years before returning home to his farm.

Frank was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his son, Marvin (Tracy) Frey, Sturgis; daughters, Marilyn (Ron) Tysdal, Sturgis, Arlene (Scott) Sherwood, Watertown, and Barb (Doug) Kranz, Watertown; brother, Paul (Sheryl) Frey, Sturgis; sisters, Audrey (Gary) Masters, Yakima, WA, and Linda (Frank) Harwood, Sturgis; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his puppy, Lady.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, and three grandchildren.

A memorial has been established to the restoration of St. Martin's Chapel in Sturgis.
