Frank Dewey Johnson, 81, Lead, died Friday, July 2, 2010 at his home in Lead surrounded by family.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Pastor Lloyd Lemke officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Memorials have been established to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis and Hospice of the Northern Hills.
Frank was born September 9, 1928 at Mobridge, SD, to John M. and Minnie (Beyerle) Johnson.
In 1951 he joined the Army and was honorably discharged in 1953. He returned home and helped build the Pactola Dam in 1955.He married Mae O'Brien on December 4, of 1955 at Glenham, SD.
Frank started working at Homestake Gold Mine on November 15, 1955. He worked as a contract miner in timber stopes, open cut and fill. He put screens and ladders in bore hole raises. He retired on December 31, 1990 and went to work with his sons in the roofing business..
He enjoyed camping with his family at Pactola, hunting, fishing, playing cards; especially pinochle and down hill skiing well into his 70's. He liked to watch old Westerns. Frank could fix anything from cars to faucets. He was hard working but the most special part of his life was his family. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis and a lifetime member of the NRA.
Survivors include his wife Mae, Lead; sons Glenn Johnson, Lead, Darwin (Danna) Johnson, St. Onge; daughters, Valerie Littleton, Elk Point, Shari Johnson, Lead; sisters, Florence (Dale) Long, Denver, CO, Grace Schott, Mobridge, Gladys Johnson, CA; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Minroy, Martin and George; one sister, Lucille Thompson.
