Obituary

Freida Kallenberger, Sturgis, died Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor David Walker officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery.

Freida was born July 20, 1919, to Christ and Emma (Kirschman) Herman. She was raised on a farm just east of Eureka, SD. She had five brothers and four sisters. She married William "Bill" Kallenberger on November 25, 1937, in McPherson County. Together they raised five children on a farm east of Hosmer, SD.

She enjoyed gardening, quilting, canning, baking, and was well known as a spunky German lady on a tractor helping on the farm. She milked cows and chasing chickens was her exercise. In the evenings, Freida and Bill enjoyed company by playing cards and drinking homemade beer with friends. They sold their farm and moved to Deadwood, SD, in 1957. Bill worked in the gold mine and Freida cleaned house as well as working in the restaurants. They then moved to Yakima, WA, and bought a fruit orchard which they operated for 20 years. In 1976, they moved to Sturgis and retired.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church. Freida became a resident of Sturgis Regional Senior Care in 2006, where she enjoyed playing bingo and watching over the staff and other residents. She was known for calling everybody "sweetheart" and adopted the caregivers as her second family.

Freida is survived by daughters, Frances Wood, Sturgis, Shirley Hall, Yakima, WA, Bernice Huff, Tieton, WA, and Sandra Engel, Sturgis; brothers, Eugene Herman, West Virginia, and Christ Herman, Fort Worth, TX; sisters, Leah Murphy, Palm Springs, CA, Esther Amann, Aberdeen, Violet Lessard, Yakima, WA, and Delores Marino, Kent, WA; fourteen grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; son, Marvin; and brothers, Herbert, Edmund, Eugene, and Rueben.

A memorial has been established for the activity fund at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
