Obituary

Gary Baier was born April 3, 1954, in Portland, Oregon and came to South Dakota with his parents in 1963. He graduated from Central High School in Rapid City in 1972. He joined the US Army on May 9, 1973 and was stationed with the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado. He graduated from the United States Army Quartermaster School at Fort Lee, Virginia prior to his assignment at Fort Carson.

He was honorably discharged May 7, 1976. After his discharge he returned to South Dakota and was self employed all of his working years in refrigeration, home heating units, air conditioning, and appliance repair. At one time he owned and operated the Quality Mart Appliance and furniture store in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.

He is survived by his two sons from a previous marriage, Greg and Jeff Baier of Sturgis; grand daughters Keylee and Jazlynn, Rapid City; his parents Edward and Hilda (Sandy) Baier of Sturgis; one brother, Brian Baier, Lead; one sister, Karen Whitford, Sturgis; Connie Baier, Belle Fourche; two step children; several grand children; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gary had courageously fought cancer for the past ten years prior to his death on March 14, 2010. He has requested cremation and graveside service at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, South Dakota. The graveside services will be held on Friday, March 19, 2010, at 10 a.m. Family and friends may gather at Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery.
