Weyer

Gertrude Berneice Weyer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on March 13, 1915 to Edward and Pauline (Polenz) Meyer. She was orphaned at the age of five. Gertrude was adopted at the age of seven by George and Clara (Neuser) Fluhrer. The Fluhrer family came to their homestead south of White Owl, S.D. in 1922. Gertrude attended grade school at the Pine Creek School south of White Owl. She spent her freshman year at Faith High School, her sophomore year at New Under- wood and transferred to Sturgis High School for her junior and senior years. She graduated in 1932. She attended Spearfish Normal School and received a teaching degree. Gertrude also took a business course in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In October of 1934, Gertrude married Elmer Weyer at the Catholic Church in Marcus, S.D. After the children were all out of grade school she worked for the Ben Franklin Store in Sturgis for ten years. She spent most of her adult life in Sturgis but also resided in Belle Fourche, Nisland and Newell, S.D.
Gertrude, 91, died August 3, 2006 at the Sturgis Long Term Health Care Center.
She was preceded in death by both sets of parents; her husband, Elmer; two sons, Lawrence (Larry) and Jerome (Jerry), four sisters, one brother, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Gertrude is survived by four sons and one daughter; William and Sandra Weyer, Eureka, CA; Edward and Loretta Weyer, Rapid City, S.D.; Melvin and Sally Weyer, Keystone, S.D.; Merlin and Dianne Weyer, Pierre, S.D.; Al and Dixie Karlson, San Bernardino, CA. She is also survived by two daughters-in-law; Norma Weyer, Sturgis, and Deloris Weyer, Newell S.D. and special friends; Gordon and Katrina Madison,CA. and Mary Jo Egger, Rapid City, S.D. At the time of her death Gertrude had 23 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Gertrude's special interests were spending time with her family and her church. She also was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles, crafts, bingo and playing cards.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 13, 2006 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel, 1235 Junction Avenue, Sturgis, S.D. The Rosary will be at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel at 7 p.m. with Father Arnold Kari, a time of sharing will follow the Rosary Service. The funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., August 14, 2006 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1049 Howard St., Sturgis, S.D. Burial will be in Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis. Family and friends are invited to return to the Catholic Church for lunch following the internment.
A memorial has been established to the Easter Seal Foundation.
