Glen "Pete" Peterson 83 of Rapid City passed away Sunday, April 17, 2011 at the RCRH Hospice House. A memorial service will be 11:30 am Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, with Rev. Brent Woodard officiating. Private family inurnment will take place at the Black Hills National Cemetery. Pete was a retired member of the US Military. He served in the Merchant Marines at the beginning of WWII, joined the Navy in 1945 where he served in the Pacific Theater of the war. After the war, he got out of the Navy and joined the Air Force. He retired from the US Air Force as an air traffic controller in 1974. During his stint in the air force, Pete was deployed to the Korean War 1953 and then spent a year in Vietnam in 1967. During his time in the military, Pete received numerous medals and citations to include a Bronze Star, Presidential commendations, Outstanding Unit Award for Valor, Korean Service ribbon with four battle stars and a Vietnam Service ribbon with three battle stars. Pete was also very active in Masonry and Eastern Star. He is a Past Grand Master of Masons in South Dakota from 1994-1995. He was a very active and dedicated member of Battle River Lodge #92 in Hermosa. One of his biggest accomplishments with the Lodge was his role in the hard work and drive in helping the Lodge build a new Lodge building. Pete was very proud of his Lodge and the work they do. He was very active in several other affiliated organizations to include Naja Temple Shrine, Schrader Commandery #9, Rapid City Royal Arch Masons, Legion of Honor charter member, Minnelusa Chapter - Order DeMolay, Past DeMolay Advisor, Recipient of Cross of Honor, Past Assoc Grand Guardian of International Order of Job's Daughters of South Dakota, Past Assoc Bethel Guardian of Bethel #5, Past Patron of Battle River Chapter #142. Survivors include his wife Christie Peterson of Rapid City, son Cliff Peterson and wife Terry of Hermosa, daughter Glenda Peterson Meeks and husband Mike Meeks of Rapid City and two grandchildren, Laressa Peterson and Jada Peterson. He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Mildred and Harry Landreyou, sister Juanita Golding and brother Clifford Peterson. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the South Dakota Masonic CHIPS program or Eastern Star ACTS program in Pete's name. Pete was an outstanding man and will be greatly missed.
