Gregory John Overholt was born March 21, 1948 to John Henry and Marjorie Ann (DeSeive) Overholt in Rapid City, SD.  At a young age, Greg's family moved to Battle Ground, Washington for several years.  They returned to Rapid City and he attended high school there through his junior year, his family moved and he graduated from Belle Fourche High School.  He then attended two years of college, studying drafting, before enlisting in the U.S. Army which became his career. After spending a year in Vietnam, he returned to South Dakota, where he met Iris Hammond in Spearfish.  He proposed to her on their third date and were married in Colorado Springs in 1970.  Many thought because of the whirlwind romance their marriage would never last, but they were together for nearly 55 years, raising two wonderful sons.  Greg continued his military career serving two years as a recruiter in Sturgis, before serving in Germany, Fort Riley, KS and finished his career in the Army at the Military Academy in West Point, NY, retiring in 1988.  After returning to South Dakota living in Black Hawk and later Piedmont, he continued a career of service, serving 19 years at the Pennington County Sherriff's department in corrections administration, helping develop the work release program. He retired as a Lieutenant from Pennington County in 2007.

Greg loved hunting, making knives, camping and travel.  After waiting 18 years to draw an elk tag and planning his hunt for many years, he got a large 6x6 elk only 20 minutes into the season, which now hangs in the Rapid City Elks Club.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marjorie Overholt; brother, Rex Overholt.

Survivors include his wife, Iris Overholt, Piedmont; sons, John (Audra) Overholt, Newell and Jeremy (Kimberly) Overholt, Windsor, CO; five grandchildren, Eric Hancock, Gabrielle Overholt, Chloe Overholt, Flint Overholt and Mason Overholt.
