Obituary

Harley Gray, age 69 of Black Hawk, passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Rapid City Regional Hospital surrounded by his family.

Harley was born January 10, 1947, in rural Douglas County, Missouri, to Raymond and Lala Gray. He graduated from Norwood (MO) High School in 1964. Harley enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1966. He served for 4 years at Ellsworth AFB including 5 months in Vietnam as crew chief on a B52 bomber.

Harley married Diane Schmautz on November 18, 1967. They were blessed with two children, a daughter, Lisa, in 1969 and a son, Rodney, in 1973. Upon Harley's discharge from the Air Force, they settled in Lead, where he would spend 25 years working for the Homestake Mining Company. While living in Lead, Harley was a member of the Lead volunteer fire department and the Lead volunteer police reserve. In 1997, he went to work for Roth Trucking where he was employed for 2 years. In 1999, he went to work for Trimac Transportation in Rapid City and he and Diane moved to Black Hawk in 2000. Harley worked for Trimac until his health began to fail in August of 2016. He became an accomplished truck driver, finishing in the top 5 in the SD state truck driving competition for 4 consecutive years and earning a trip to the national competition in Pittsburgh, PA, in 2014.

In his spare time, Harley enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycle, and working on cars and trucks, but his greatest joy, by far, was spending time with his family and friends.

Grateful for having shared his life are the family members he leaves behind: his wife of 49 years, Diane Gray of Black Hawk; his daughter, Lisa (Jim) Maciejewski of Summerset; his son, Rodney (Terri) Gray of Summerset; 4 grandchildren, Alex (Jordan) Feterl, Dylan Johnson, Jessie Gray, and Jake Gray; a great-grandson due to arrive in January 2017; one sister, Mary Gray of Springfield, MO; 2 brothers, Bill Gray of Kirbyville, MO, and Doyle Gray of Seymour, MO; as well as countless in-laws, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Steve Gray.

Visitation will be Tuesday, December 13th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Karl Kroger officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established.
