Obituary

Harley Meade Price was born at home on the Price/Crites homestead in Opal, SD on March 21, 1925 to Joseph and Ida (Crites) Price. Harley attended grade school at the Old Pine School and graduated from Faith High School in 1945.

Immediately after graduation, Uncle Sam sent Harley a "Greetings Letter" calling him to serve In World War II. He then joined the Army and was stationed for a year and a half in Frankfurt, Germany.

Upon returning from serving his country, he met the love of his life, Ellen Lorraine Reese, at the Maurine Dance Hall. They were married in Sturgis, SD on June 9, 1949. They eventually moved to the Price/Crites homestead where they lived and ranched for the next 65 years.

Harley was a true cowboy. During his cowboy life, he broke many horses for area ranchers and many bones for himself. He trailed horses from Usta to the sale barn in Mobridge. Harley loved his ranch and his ranch work. He took pride in raising good cattle and he always fed them all they could eat!

During his lifetime of ranching, Harley built miles and miles of fence and swathed hundreds of acres of alfalfa. One of his greatest pleasures was getting in his swather and heading to the fields. On his road of life, he worked many jobs to provide for his family, he helped build Highway 212 and he also laid cable for the missile bases in Meade County.

Harley took pride in his community and helped to build several structures there, the Opal Hall and the Opal Church. He also managed the Opal Hall for many years and many a good time was had at the dances and celebrations held there. Harley loved to dance and you could always find Harley and Ellen at the Opal dances. Thank God he had a wife and 4 daughters for dancing partners, because he always danced every dance.

Harley passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on November 7, 2014.

Harley loved family, and thankful for sharing his life are his wife of 65 years, Ellen Price and children; Judy (Wes) Reeves, Penny (Ric) Lensegrav, Rich (Ronda) Price, Roxie (Squeak) Haines, Pam (Larry) Ross, and Danny (Larinda) Price. His brother, Walt (Thora) Price and sister, Opal (Don) Grubl. He loved his grandchildren and is survived by 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
