Obituary

Hot Springs - Harold Ackerman, 73, of Hot Springs died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at the South Dakota State Veterans Home in Hot Springs.

Visitation will be noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Graveside services will be Monday, April 14, 2008, at 10 a.m. at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with Chaplain Bill Zandri officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard. Family and friends may gather at Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery.

Harold was born May 21, 1934, in Herreid, S.D., to Christ and Madalina (Oberlander) Ackerman. He attended school through the eighth grade in Herreid and Aberdeen. Harold worked for Twin City Roofing and worked in the construction field building homes in Aberdeen until he joined the U.S. Army in 1957, where he served in Korea. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Aberdeen and worked construction. In 1972, Harold moved to Hot Springs. While at the veterans home, he worked in the domiciliary with patients and in laundry. Harold was a member of the South Dakota State Veterans Home Honor Guard.

Harold was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. He loved bingo, pinochle, and cards. He also enjoyed going for coffee with his friends and spending time with his family. He spent every Christmas and birthdays with his family and friends.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Leona (Paul) Crane of Richmond, Va., Verna Tolson of Aberdeen, S.D., Raymond (Judy) Ackerman of Aberdeen, S.D., Myrlene (Curtis) Weishaar of West Bend, Wis., Robert Ackerman of Aberdeen, S.D., JoAnn Ackerman of Aberdeen, S.D., and Richard (Karen) Ackerman of Aberdeen, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Bernice Miller; and one brother-in-law, Earl Tolson.

A memorial has been established to the South Dakota State Veterans Home.
