Obituary

Harold Raymond Bauer, 102, Rapid City, died Monday, September 21, 2015, at his residence in Rapid City.

Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 28, 2015, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Rev. Denzel Nonhof and Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.

Harold was born September 20, 1913, at Wagner, SD, to Ernest William and Bessie Viola (Shoop) Bauer. In 1919, he moved with his family to a ranch north of Marcus, SD. He attended rural school and Sturgis High School graduating in 1932. He attended Black Hills Teachers College at Spearfish where he lettered in football and received a teaching certificate. He taught for seven years in rural schools in Central Meade County.

On October 10, 1936, he married June V. Simons at Sturgis. In 1940, they moved to a ranch southeast of Enning where he and his wife operated the Bauer Angus Ranch until their retirement. He was the first president and organizer of the Black Hills Angus Association. Harold also served 16 years on the West River Electric Board including three years as President. He was an organizer of the Black Hills Egg Producers. He served several years on the local school board and 5 years on the Meade School Board. He served on the South Dakota rural electric board. Harold was active in various other community and agricultural organizations.

In 1990, he and June moved to Rapid City where Harold became active at the Canyon Lake Senior Citizens Center. After the death of his wife, Harold moved to the Alps Apartments where the many residents were like family to him.

Survivors include his sons, Kent (Sharon) Bauer and Linn (Beth) Bauer; daughters, Julee (Lyle) Steinmen and Peggy (Dan) Bourdo; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, infant son, and granddaughter.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Canyon Lake Senior Citizens Center in Rapid City where Harold enjoyed endless hours of playing cards, pool, and socializing with his many friends.
