Harold was born on March 15, 1951, to Harold and Lulu (Eddy) Fay in Sedalia, Missouri. When he was still a young child, his family moved and he grew up in Estherville, Iowa and South Sioux City, Nebraska. He attended school in South Sioux City and played football, basketball, and ran track. He started working for Woods Saw Mill when he was just 16 years old. After a few years, Woods Saw Mill moved him from the Iowa and Nebraska area to Spearfish. He was a very skilled and hard worker and became Head Sawyer. When Woods closed, he went to work for Christensen Saw Mill in Whitewood and then to Devil's Tower Forest Products in Hulett, Wyoming. In 1996, he went to work for B and B Foundation as a driller in Rapid City, and had been working there until shortly before his death.
In 1971, Harold married Victoria Smith and to this union two daughters were born, Amanda and Jennifer. They later divorced in 1988. He then met Dee Nelson in June of 1991, and they were married that November.
Harold enjoyed the outdoors, camping with his family, hunting, catfishing, and seeing what his family would do next.
