Harold was born February 11, 1926, at a farmstead in Lowry, SD, to Jacob and Christina (Huber) Permann. He attended School in Lowry. At age 14, he worked on the farm, and then in California. He returned to South Dakota in 1950. He entered the US Army in 1950 and was honorably discharged December 10, 1956. He was in the 38th Parle and was on the front lines in the Korean War for 10 Months and 28 days. He then returned to South Dakota March 15, 1952, a Staff /Tech Sargent. Harold was very proud to have been able to serve his country. He received a Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with the Bronze Star, U.N. Service Medal. In January 2016, he was presented a Medal for Ambassador for Peace from the Republic of Korea at the state Capital in Pierre, SD.
He worked as a Road Engineer for the State Hwy. Dept. from 1953-1963. Then for the BIA Road Dept. as a Civil Engineer working on the Cheyenne and Standing Rock reservations and for the BIA Aberdeen office.
On October 25, 1963, he married Pauline "Peggy" Hockesson and to this union are two children; daughter, Jan, was adopted in 1960 and son, Lon, was born in 1963. Harold retired in 1984 and lived in Mobridge, SD, from 1963 till June 2016 and then moved to Heart Ranch in Rapid City, SD, and wintered in Mesa, AZ.
Harold was a member of the Shriners in Mobridge and Mesa, Masons, a lifetime member of the Moose and American Legion and V.F.W. He was also a member of the U.C.C. Church in Mobridge and of the Community Church in Apache Wells. Harold was very proud to have been able to drive Vets to the VA in Sturgis, SD.
Harold Herbert Permann "HP" passed away January 31, 2017, at Hospice of the Valley in Mesa, AZ, at the age of 90 years old, which he proudly informed everyone. There was a Celebration of Life in Apache Wells, Mesa, AZ on February 7, 2017. There will be a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 19, 2017, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD, followed by a lunch at the Veterans Club in Sturgis. We ask everyone to meet at Kinkade Funeral Chapel by 10:15 a.m. and follow in procession to the cemetery.
Harold "HP" is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pauline "Peggy" Permann; daughter, Jan (Kevin) Wenzel of Quinn, SD; son, Lon (KaTeri) Permann of Sturgis, SD; ten grandchildren, Jackie, Jason, Melanie, Vivian, Alex, Tristan, Austin, Chante, Steven, and Fauna; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty (Jerry) Oxner and Norva Giese; brother, Hess (Arba) Huber; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Permann, Norma Haerer, and Dotty Gunsalus; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
HP was preceded in death by his father, Jacob (Ida) Permann; mother, Christina (Jake) Schanzenbach; brothers, Herbert and Rodney Permann; sister, Adaline (Brownie) Couger; brothers-in-law, Donald Haererand and Gerry Gansalus; and sister-in-law, Mary Lou Moore.
