Obituary

Harold E. Severson, 94, entered eternal peace on Thursday, July 30, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in New Underwood, SD.
Harold Edwin Severson was born on July 12, 1926, as a triplet with his brothers, Gerald and Harry, to the late Swen and Ida (Keyes) Severson, Sr. They were born in the "stone house" that their father built in Clark, SD. Gerald died shortly after birth. Harold attended Lorenz School in Lincoln Township for six years, and the Eubank Country School in Garfield Township for two years. In 1950, he served our country in the U.S. Air Force. After getting out, he and his brothers, Bud and Harry, went into a partnership and owned a ranch in Clark County until 1952, when they separated to own their own ranches.
On March 15, 1952, he married the love of his life, Nylia Smith, in Madison, MN. They moved to Arizona for two years, until they moved back to Clark, SD, where they ranched until they purchased their own ranch in Opal, SD. In 1959, they bought and moved to a ranch in Creighton, SD, where they made their home and raised four children - Steven, Brenda, Clayton, and Barry. They stayed there until 1985, when, due to health issues, Harold retired to Rapid City, SD. However, he missed hunting, fishing, and working with his Black Angus cattle so much, that he purchased a "hobby ranch" in Crawford, NE, which kept him busy and preoccupied during his retirement years. He also enjoyed playing poker on the video machines in the casinos!
Harold was a member of the American Legion Post 0022 since 1996. He was a very kind and gentle soul, had a loving and generous heart, and was always giving to others. Even to his last days, his memory and laughter generated a contagious spirit. He was known at the nursing home as a fun-loving guy, who was popular for ribbing the nurses and having constant visitors. He was proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and looked with hope for their futures. While he did not graduate from high school, he graduated from the school of life with honors.
Harold leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his wife of 68 years, Nylia (Smith) Severson; sister-in-law, Violetta Severson of Watertown, SD; children, Steven (Cindy), Brenda (Wayne) Kummer, Clayton (Tammy) of Rapid City, and Barry (Adelaida) of Gilbert, AZ; adoring grandchildren, Andrea (Josh) Christianson of Craig, CO, Nicklaus (Samantha) Kummer of Rapid City, SD, Jackie (Eric) Westberg of Mankato, MN, Paige and Jenna Severson of Rapid City, SD; and Lars, Brock, and Swen Severson of Gilbert, AZ; ever-loving great-grandchildren, Cameron Coleman (stationed in Norfolk, VA), Ailah and Colton Wesberg, and Freya Kummer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Swen and Ida (Keyes) Severson, Sr.; and siblings, Bud, Bertha (Fred) Farnum, Helen (Lester) Johnson, Harry (Clarice), and baby Gerald.
