Obituary

Harriet "Granny" Lolley of Sturgis, South Dakota, died at her home on May 31, 2026.

She was born October 18,1951, in Sturgis, to Ben and Dorothy Olson. She was a member of the Sturgis Brown High School graduating class of 1969. She married Jerry Lolley, of Mission, SD on November 1,1969, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

In December 1970, she gave birth to a son and moved back to Sturgis in April 1971 while Jerry was deployed with the US Air Force to SE Asia. In October 1974, she gave birth to a daughter. As a military spouse, she lived in many locations and worked part time in several food industry positions and provided child daycare in her home. She learned cake decorating and became very good at it. She adapted to the changes that come with frequent moves to different military installations with Jerry and became very self-sufficient because of Jerry’s frequent deployments for varying lengths of time. After Jerry’s retirement from the Air Force, they brought the family back to Sturgis. After returning to Sturgis, she provided the community more childcare and worked in grocery stores, bakeries and even the City Liquor Store in Sturgis.

During the military time she learned to bowl and received a bowling coach’s certification while in Germany. After returning to Sturgis, she managed and coached youth bowling for about 15 years, took a break and then did it all over again for about 15 more years. She was recognized by the SD USBC for her success with young bowlers. Many of the youth bowlers became very good bowlers as adults and then brought their children to the Sturgis Youth bowling leagues.

Honoring the family’s time with the military, she was a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries. Granny was asked to be the contact person for the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard when funeral directors needed military honors arranged. She accepted and held this position until her death.

Granny is survived by her husband, Jerry; children, Grant and Dawn Ann Lolley in Whitewood, SD; Lara, Mark and Reagan Wesenberg of Ft. Atkinson, WI; grandson, Andrew Hobbs of River Falls, WI; brother, Bobby Olson of Gillette; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews scattered all over the nation.

She will be privately laid to rest at Black Hills National Cemetery. There will be a celebration of her life at the Sturgis Veterans Club on June 10, 2026 at noon. Honorary pallbearers are all the members of the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard and Post 33 American Legion Riders.

In remembrance of Granny’s life and dedication to our veterans, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard or Post 33 American Legion Riders: PO Box 181 Sturgis SD 57785.
