Hazel Lucille Holmes, 92, Sturgis, died Thursday, July 31, 2014, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at 1:00pm at Bear Butte Cemetery with Rev. Denzel Nonhof officiating. Visitation will be held from 8:00am to service time on Tuesday.

Hazel was born on February 22, 1922, at Lesterville, SD to Chester and Myrtle Dow. At age 8, the family moved to Fairpoint, SD. In 1936, she moved to Sturgis with her family, two brothers and three sisters.

She met and married Sgt. Lenard Conkle in 1939, when he was stationed at Fort Meade. After deployment to the WWII European front, he was killed in France during October 1944. They had one child, Judith Lee (Conkle) Harwood.

She met and married her second husband, DeVillo Holmes from Mobridge, SD, in January of 1946. He had five children, Patti, Jim, Sonny, Gary, and Wayne. They lived in Sturgis, while he worked as a mechanic at Matkins Motors. They enjoyed their airplane, and riding their Indian motorcycles. They were very active members of the Jackpine Gypsies motorcycle club.

She lived in Sturgis most of her life and enjoyed being a homemaker, raising African Violets, working outside in her yard, and sewing. She was a member of Eastern Star, Sturgis Senior Citizens, and was baptized as a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis.

She is survived by her daughter, Judith Lee Conkle Harwood of Sturgis, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be set up for the benefit of the education of Hazel's great-grandchildren.
