Hazel Louise (Spring) Jensen, 83, of rural Newell, SD, passed away May 24, 2014 at her home. Hazel was the youngest daughter born to Frank and Beatha Spring of Hermosa, SD, on January 27, 1931 at Rapid City Hospital. Hazel attended the home school at Fairview for eight years and then the country school was closed. Hazel's older sister, Carol (Spring) Hoover taught at the Custer State Park School. Hazel accompanied her sister, Carol, in order to complete her eighth grade education. The following year Hazel stayed with her older sister, Carol, and Tanna Tippons at Fairburn, SD to finish her 9th grade and the next three years at Rapid City Central High School to graduate in May of 1949. Hazel attended Black Hills State College in 1950 thru 1951 (for 1 1/2 years) studying to be a teacher. She taught one year at the Dalzell School, ten miles east of Elm Springs, SD. Hazel met her husband, Frank Theodore Jensen, who was a neighbor to her brother, Ted, while visiting her brother and his wife, Kathryn Spring of rural Union Center. Hazel Spring and Frank Jensen were married on November 9, 1952 at a Lutheran Church in Sturgis. They ranched for 15 years in the Fairpoint area. In February 1968, they purchased the Fred and Lila Noltenmeier place. Andrew Jensen is presently on the home place, southeast of Newell, continuing on with the farming and ranching operation. Hazel always prepared three meals a day plus desserts as well, liked gardening and canning. She helped with lambing duties until the last ten years due to failing health and poor eye sight caused by the eye disease of Retinitis Pigmentosa. She kept her spirit pretty well till in 1999, then she started battling with dementia trouble with friends and her only daughter plus being legally blind did not help either. She enjoyed visiting with neighbor ladies on the phone daily plus attending family reunions. She was a wonderful aunt, a special lady by relatives and friends. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Jensen, her parents, Frank and Beatha Spring and siblings, Theodore Spring of Enning and Carol Hoover of Sheridan, Wyo. and nephew, Bob Jensen of Fairpoint. She is survived by a brother, Ben Spring of Hermosa. Also her children, Barb and Norm Ismay of Vale and Andrew Jensen of rural Newell and grandsons, Chester and Karolyn Ismay of Kenosha, Wisconsin and Wes Ismay of Vale. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 2:00 pm on Monday, June 2, 2014 at Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis. Services will follow at 2:00 pm on Monday at the funeral home with Rev. Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will take place immediately following the service at Bear Butte Cemetery. There will be a potluck luncheon to follow at the Sturgis Veteran's Club, 868 main street in Sturgis. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
