Helen Ann (Weyrich) Komes was born December 19, 1921 near Volunteer, SD, on the family farm with a midwife assisting, to Jakob and Margaret (Lorang) Weyrich. She grew up on the farm and ranch and attended the Wolff School through the 8th grade. She helped with the children and the work on the farm and ranch until she married.

Helen married Joseph Komes on February 21, 1941 at the Catholic Church in Bear Butte Valley.

The couple moved to their own home in lower Bear Butte Valley. They raised seven children and Helen helped her husband with the farm and ranch work. She quilted, sewed, gardened, canned and especially like her cattle. She lived on the ranch until March of 2008 when she entered Foot Hills Assisted Living.

Helen was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. She served on the school board for many years, she was a 30 year member of Thursday Anns Extension Club, member of the Altar Society.

Helen Ann Komes, 92, Sturgis, died Sunday, July 27, 2014, at the Sturgis Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 30, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a rosary beginning at 7 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 31, at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Fr. Timothy Castor officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Aloysius Cemetery.

Survivors include her sons, Timothy (Kathy) Komes, Sturgis, Todd (Hope) Komes, Newell; daughters, Barbara J. Hudson, Sturgis, Patricia J. (Jerry) Casteel, Sturgis, SD, Jody E. Diestel, Aberdeen, Marjorie A. (Jack) Duprel, Sturgis, Carol E. (Wayne) Oedekoven, Vale; brother Paul (Helen) Weyrich, Newcastle, WY, Frank (Karen) Weyrich, Yoder, WY; sisters, Gladys Brown, Vale, Dorothy (Lynn) Dunn, Vale; 18 grandchildren, Tom (Bernice) Duprel, James (Lori) Duprel, Chris (Vicki) Hudson, Keith (Laura) Hudson, Bobbi (Dave) Emmett, Adam Oedekoven, Debbie (DJ Meyer) Oedekoven, April (Kelly Halter) Oedekoven, Ryan (Keri) Casteel, Kristy Casteel, Michelle (Chris) Mohr, Laurie Komes, Josh (Heidi) Komes, Amanda (Dale) Mahaffy, Brandon (Paige) Komes, Joe Komes, Jesse Komes, Matt (Carlee) Komes; 24 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, sisters, Louise Christenson, Clara Knutson, Mary Rosser; brothers, Vic Weyrich, Leo Weyrich; son in laws, Mike Hudson, James Diestel; one grandchild, Jacque L. Duprel Jr.

Memorials have been established to the Sturgis, Vale and Hereford Volunteer Fire Departments.
