Helen was born February 15, 1923, at Grand Island, NE, to Forest Loren, Sr., and Ellen (Sunberg) Huston. She had an older brother, Forest, and sister, Mildred. She was raised on a farm south of Grand Island and attended rural school in district one. She graduated from Grand Island High School in 1940.
Her father passed away six weeks before her graduation. She went to work that fall caring for a family of four.
Her mother, sister, brother-in-law, and nephew moved to Oregon and Helen went to work during the summer of 1941 for her uncle's family.
Helen married her high school sweetheart, Don Erion, April 5, 1942. They moved to Portland, OR, where she worked for the Chase Bag factory. They returned that fall to Grand Island, so Don could be near his folks, as his draft number was coming up. Don was drafted and Helen lived with his parents. They built a home in Grand Island where their four sons were born.
They moved to Minden, NE, where Helen kept books for the Yost Lumber Company where Don was manager.
They moved to Newton, KS, for a short time and then moved to Holdrege, NE. Helen did bookkeeping at the Gamble Store and then later kept books for Perry Lumber Company for seventeen years. She retired from there and a year later Don retired. In 1979, they moved to Sturgis, SD, and they built a home in the beautiful Black Hills.
Helen enjoyed raising a large garden and flowers. Helen was a member of the United Methodist Women. Don and Helen enjoyed "R V" ing for recreation and traveled to many states and Canada.
Helen E. Erion, 93, Sturgis, died Monday, December 5, 2016, at Sturgis Regional Hospital.
Survivors include three sons, Ron (Terry) Erion, Cozad, NE, Dan Erion, Sturgis, and Sam (Linda) Erion, Sturgis; daughter-in-law, Marge (Kermit) Erion Johnson; six grandchildren; and one stepgrandson.
Preceding her in death include her husband, Don; son, David; her parents; brother, Forest, and sister, Mildred.
Visitation will be 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 12, 2016, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
