Sturgis | Helen T. LeLaCheur Our Lord summoned an angel to take Helen's hand to lead her to her heavenly home on December 26, 2014 after a brief battle with bone cancer. Helen was born in Napoleon, ND on October 16, 1924 to a poor German immigrant couple, Christ and Katie Schumaker. She spent most of her youth in the Belle Fourche area where she picked sugar beets and worked at the U&I Sugar Beet Factory until an accident that took three of the fingers on her left hand. Helen was then employed at Fry's Hardware until she met Doyle LeLaCheur, the love of her life. They married on March 19, 1946 in Broadus, MT. From their union they had three daughters, Janet, Vicki, and Gloria. After their children were raised, Helen briefly worked at the Sturgis Drug Store and the Fort Meade Veteran's Hospital until her retirement. She tried retirement for a while, but decided retirement was not for her so worked part time at a local nursing home. Helen had an incredible work ethic so was loved by her employers and co-workers. Helen enjoyed watching bull riding and listening to county music. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle; her parents; her brother, Rudolph Schumaker; sisters, Delores Short and Irene Tammi. She is survived by daughters, Janet Gutsche, Sturgis, Vicki (Jerome) Bertsch, Sun City, AZ and Gloria (Ed) Hawks, Howes, SD; five grandchildren, Sherry Gutsche, Kristi Ellstrom, Tiffani (Jeff) Hockett, Cynthia (Matt) Nelson, and Bryan Braley, and four great grandchildren, Justin Hockett, Olivia Ellstrom, Makenna and Parker Nelson. She is also survived by one brother, Oliver (Kathy) Schumaker, and four sisters, Alice (Oscar) Walthall, Sturgis, Edna (Harvey) Cox, Sturgis, Joanne Pope, Dothan, AL and Hazel Brink, Sturgis. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Tuesday, December 30, 2014 with a visitation one hour prior at Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis with Chaplain Randy Bradley officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche. The family would like to give a special thank you to Hospice of the Northern Hills for the wonderful and compassionate care given. A memorial has been established to the Hospice of the Northern Hills.
